Snorkel Molokini Crater

Molokini is called a crater, but it’s really a rare type of geological formation. It’s known as a tuff cone or pressure release. This is similar to the cinder cones found on the slopes of Haleakalā. These tuff cones are so rare that only three of them exist in the world. Molokini ascends nearly 330 feet from the ocean floor to the surface. This unique formation creates several microclimates in a small stretch of reef. This increases the number of species you can see in a small area. Over 100 varieties of coral and 250 species of fish are found within this small inlet.
Maui Snorkeling offers all-inclusive 5-Hour Morning Molokini Crater Snorkeling Tours to Molokini Crater and Turtle Town. You’ll have the best snorkeling experience in Maui!

Above water, Molokini is a seabird sanctuary. During the summer months, thousands of birds flock to Molokini to use it as a nesting site. These include the Great Frigatebird (iwa), the red-footed boobie (‘a), and the Hawaiian shearwater (‘ua’u kan I).
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the US military took over Molokini and other islands. They used these islands for target practice and training. Molokini was the perfect target. It was about the same size and height as an aircraft carrier. Plus, it would never sink. The deep waters around Molokini allowed for aircraft raids. They also allowed battleships and submarines to target with heavy shells and torpedoes. If you get the chance to tour Molokini’s back wall, you can see the big gouge marks. These marks show where over 40% of the island was blasted away.

We had an absolutely amazing snorkel trip—truly the highlight of our vacation! All four of our kids (ages 9–12) had the time of their lives. The crew, Morgan and Christian, were fantastic—so friendly, helpful, and great with the kids. Captain Greg was fun, upbeat, and kept the energy high the whole time.
The snorkeling itself was breathtaking. The water was crystal clear, the coral was vibrant, and we saw sea turtles and tons of colorful tropical fish. It felt like swimming through an aquarium.
The food was just right, the music playlist was perfect, and the entire experience was seamless and fun from start to finish.
Huge shoutout to Island Dream Productions for the unbelievable photos! Just plan on buying the photo package when you book your trip—it’s 100% worth it. They captured truly incredible underwater shots of our kids and us parents, and we’ll cherish those memories forever.
Could not recommend this trip more—perfect for families, and an experience we’ll never forget!
