Huialoha church in Kaupo, Maui, Hawaii. Wedged between the looming, leeward shoulder of Haleakala volcano and the border-less blue ocean, the rural district of Kaupo is East Maui’s version of the Wild West.
Since 1859, Huialoha Congregational Church has stood sentry on this wind-whipped coastline, a reminder of humankind’s nobler qualities: self-sacrifice, hospitality, and simple joy.
Battered by time and the elements, this little church on the edge of nowhere might have become a lost cause – had not so many people come together to restore and preserve the church.
The most beautiful part of this spot is the surrounding scenery. The coastal views are exquisite.
